East Jessamine High School English Language Arts Department Mission Statement
The East Jessamine High School English Language Arts Department is committed to a developmental English program, which promotes intellectual autonomy and scholarship for all students. We strive to produce reflective, critical, and creative thinkers through the experiences of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Therefore, the English classroom is an interpretive community in which students are engaged in transforming information and experience into knowledge and understanding. The department encourages students to be active learners who accept both the challenge and the responsibility for their own learning.
The primary goal of the program is to teach students to:
• Read closely
• Think critically
• Challenge assumptions
• Practice methods of interpretation and research
• Analyze the formal qualities of texts
• Approach texts from various perspectives
• Place texts in various contexts
• Write with clarity, coherence, and precision

Hall Passes: |
Tardy Sweeps: |
You will have 3 hall passes per semester. Only one person may be out of the room at a time. Hall passes are not allowed during times of direct class instruction, during any group presentation, nor in the first or last 10 minutes of class. Please do not ask to leave the room during these times. In order to use a hall pass, you must sign out and present your student ID. Please take advantage of passing time so that you keep your restroom passes to a minimum.
If hall pass privileges are abused, your privileges will be revoked. |
All classroom teachers will close their doors after the tardy bell. Students who are not in the classroom when the door closes will be given a note by a teacher or administrator to return to class, and the tardy will be recorded.
Detention will be assigned for each accumulated tardy. |
Academic Expectations:
1. Students will participate in class discussions; learning is a collaborative experience in our classroom. 2. Students are responsible for their own makeup work. All coursework is posted to the Calendar page of our class website on a daily basis; students are expected to check this calendar and make up work in a timely fashion. 3. Students must present quality work that shows evidence of preparation and time. This class will help prepare students for future English classes as well as a successful life beyond high school. |
** Students will complete all formative and summative assessments to the best of their ability and will ask for assistance with assignments they do not understand.
*As demonstration of individual progress and learning needs, ALL formative assessments must be completed in order to earn eligibility for summative assessments. Formative assessment scores will be posted on Infinite Campus (without weight) to indicate students' current level of understanding. Any summative assessment that students do not demonstrate mastery upon must be remediated and retaken, according to details put forth on the Remediation & Retake Contract. A failure to complete a final summative assessment (major project, writing piece, or exam) will result in an INCOMPLETE for English 10. |
Behavioral Expectations:
