Summative Assessment
Recall our initial areas of research when beginning our study of The Great Gatsby. Select one of the following of those areas which interests you, and which you have already seen presenting itself in the novel:
Record the topic/area of research which most engages you, and which you know you could directly connect to events within The Great Gatsby. Transform your selected topic into a question of inquiry to guide your reading for the remainder of the novel... For example: The Jazz Age: How did the music of the Jazz Age influence people's behavior in the 1920s? How did this style of music reflect their own attitudes, behaviors, & values?
Collect notes and continue brainstorming while reading the novel; the purpose of your summative writing assessment will be to prove the answer to your question of inquiry, while supporting your reasoning with researched evidence from both the novel and outside nonfictional sources.
- The Roaring 20s (historical aspect of the setting)
- Social Class & Status in 1920 America (including the nouveau riche)
- The Jazz Age (specifically lifestyle traits associated with this style of music)
- Women in 1920 America (traditionally as opposed to the flapper)
- Marriage in 1920 America
